Part of the lecture on egg tempera included the following slideshow of work ‘up-close’ demonstrating the similarity in use of non-traditional paint techniques in the work of two of the most world class painters of the times.  The creation of modulation in effect by low surface application over impasto-ed techniques I believe was driven by the realization of the decrepitous impact the later technique had on durability of the work.
