“bacon & eggs”: egg tempera
TOUCH AS TECHNIQUE SLIDESHOW
Part of the lecture on egg tempera at the Philadelphia Sketch Club included the following slideshow of work ‘up-close’ demonstrating the similarity in use of non-traditional paint techniques in the work of two world class painters. The creation of modulation in effect by low surface application over impasto-ed techniques I believe was driven by the realization of the decrepitous impact the later technique had on durability of the work.

Egg tempera is the single simplest, most at-hand, most demonstrably durable, effectively two-dimensional, chromatic medium available to man. Essentially de-natured protein, egg yolk and water as a medium, ‘tempered’ with a color-fast pigment or colored-material, generally out-lasts any other known medium. the attendant video shows my making of the egg and water medium and imbuing cups of raw powdered pigments of my choice with the medium. there is further detail in the slideshow that follows.

“The Bermuda Effect”
a talk on Demuth, Hartley, O’Keeffe. Also commentary on personal work.
“I pointed to Hartley’s ‘Movement Series’ and Demuth’s Precisionist renderings of the distinctly linear, architectonic Bermuda, as well as O’Keeffe’s floral subjects created while visiting the island, as historic examples of this effect.”
